Kingwood Kiwanis Prayer Breakfast

The Kingwood Kiwanis will be hosting its annual National Day of Prayer Prayer breakfast on May 1, 2008 at the Kingwood Country Club from 7:00am to 7:30am. This will be the 57th Annual National Day of Prayer and the theme for this year is ‘Prayer! America’s Strength and Shield’ and is based on the verse from Psalm 28:7 which states: ‘The Lord is my strength and shield; my heart trusts in Him and I am helped.’ The breakfast will feature Tyrone Evans, Bonita House president. Tyrone Evans, Founder and President of Bonita House of Hope (BHH), successfully redeveloped distressed, multifamily rental properties formerly plagued by the social ills associated with narcotics and prostitution by establishing the Bonita Street facility in 1995. Evans effectively reclaimed the former crack cocaine drug houses in Houston’s Trinity Gardens neighborhood and transformed them into a positive asset, for which he received critical acclaim from local community groups and elected officials. Evans was responsible for the creation of the Bonita Street House of Hope CDC in 1998 and in May 2005, Evans collaborated with some of Houston’s most powerful influencers to develop a $$4.9 milliondollar treatment and housing facility for women and children on Parker Road. Equipped with nearly 200 beds in 60 apartments and dormitories, BHH uniquely combines shelter with substance abuse treatment for a population that has been hindered by negative stereotypes chemically dependant, exoffenders, HIV/AIDS sufferers and those with cooccurring mental illness and substance abuse. Additionally, BHH provides transitional/permanent housing, critical support services, and maintenance programs. Within the past year, the impact of Bonita House was furthered by Hurricane Katrina. The original facility is now utilized as an emergency shelter for hurricane victims. Evans philanthropic efforts subsequently received national coverage on Oprah, CNN’s Anderson Cooper 360, People Magazine and celebrity involvement from Chris Rock and Dave Chappelle. Evans continues to guide the mission behind Bonita with genuine compassion for the wellbeing of others. The event is $$20 per ticket and $$200 per table(includes recognition in program and centerpiece). Visit www.kingwoodkiwanis.org for more information.
