BEIJING, China (AP) — Computer maker Lenovo Group said Thursday its profits for the quarter ending December 31 jumped 198 percent to $172 million (115 million euros) on strong sales growth, including a 38 percent rise in notebook shipments.
Despite concerns about a possible U.S. slowdown and its impact on world markets, Lenovo CEO William J. Amelio said the company expects to see double-digit sales growth this year.
Even as global economic uncertainty continues to challenge everyone, we will stay intensely focused on our strategic plan, Amelio said in a conference call with analysts.
The company said it plans to start using only the Lenovo brand this year, discarding the IBM brand that it has had the right to use since it bought IBM Corp.’s personal computer unit in 2006.
Sales for the quarter rose 15 percent to $4.6 billion (3 billion euros), the company said. It said notebook shipments rose 38 percent to $2.6 billion (1.75 billion euros), accounting for 56 percent of total sales. E-mail to a friend
